Superheroes have soared into historic popularity in the past few years. Caped crusaders are demolishing the box office on a regular basis, break records left and right. Primetime television seems to feature a new hero team with each new season. Video games let us take control of our favorite defenders of the universe (or in most cases New York) to give us a glimpse of their true power.
High time for Charlotte had its own superhero coming from the pages of a comic book.
And, boy! Do we have a comic book for you! Move over Superman, Iron Man and Shazam. We’ve have discovered our new favorite superhero … Frogboy!
Written and created by Charlotte native John Burgin,
Frogboy is the culmination of a lifelong love of comics,
art and, of course, superheroes. “Drawing has been part of
my life for as long as I can remember. Used to lay on the floor
as a kid and draw for hours. Would look at picture books and comics
and try to draw what I saw,” This love of comics and art eventually led
John to study art ‘n illustration @ University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
About 6 years ago, John decided to take his passions to the next level and began
to write and draw comics of his own creation. Creating his own comics and character.
John hoped to develop a world that people could identify with and get lost in. That
inspiration behind the helmet-wearing, skateboard-riding, a staff-wielding Frogboy
is John’s very own son. John wanted to give his oldest son — the avid comic book
fan as well; the chance to be a superhero himself in the paneled pages. “When
he was younger we would read books at night and he was a fan of Batman and
Spider-Man, but I decided to create a character that could be him as the
alter ego,” says John. “At the time I was involved with ministry work
with an organization in Charlotte and a friend told me about a place
in South Africa he visited called the FROG center which stood for
‘Fully Rely On God,’” recalls John. Something about frog stayed
in John’s head and a name Frogboy rose to this city’s surface.
TACO TUESDAY TAKES OVER THE GLOBE!
After years of playing with the character, John recently released his very first official Frogboy book titled “Taco Tuesday.” To date, John has sent prints of the book to fans all across the globe, from New York and San Francisco to Ireland and Australia. Frogboy may be a Queen City Creation, but he’s on his way to becoming an international star.
“Taco Tuesday has been a real rush! I am excited that it has done as well as it has. It’s the first full Frogboy story and I wasn’t sure how it would be received,” said John. “People seem to enjoy the art, humor and the fact that it is an all-ages book that’s
still a bit edgy. People say the art style reminds them
of the art in Mad Magazine.” Not only has John been sending
his book far and wide, he’s also hopped on the local comic book
convention circuit to help share Frogboy’s adventure. In June, John
had a booth at HeroesCon, Charlotte’s largest comic book convention that
has been filling our city with heroes every summer since 1982. HeroesCon is
known as a “comics-first” convention, meaning it really focuses on the artists
and their work in print, rather than movies, video games. It’s known in the comics
community as a place for indie artist and creators; like John to have Frogboy’s name
the collaborates other artists, see industry contact and gain fans for their character.
With HeroesCon leading the pack, the comic book scene is continuing to grow stronger and stronger in town Charlotte as new conventions, writers and artists make their way to the Queen City. There are more ways to become connected to the comic community than ever before. One of John’s favorites is a group called Sketch Charlotte.
“We do meet at Common Market Oakwold locale
every Thursday to hang out, sketch, chat about things comic in pop culture.
There are pros aspiring artists and just people who like drawing, writing
who attend. Anyone can come, it is great fun.” John’s frogboy will have
made appearances at different shows and book signings through out the
rest of the year as he works on his second issue. The new book will
debut this winter. Stay up to date with frogboy; and keep tabs on
Don’t you wish you had Action Comics #1: the first appearance
of Superman, Amazing Fantasy #15, that first time Spider-Man
swung onto the scene? Don’t regret skipping out on Frogboy
issue #1, fifty years from now, as he is that officially
shredding the competition and he’s a hottest superhero
of all time! Taco Tuesday here.

any way, shape or form. James 1:2
The craftsman places an ingot of
silver on an anvil and pounds with
a sledgehammer. Once the metal is
flat enough for shaping, in a furnace it
goes. The worker alternately heats and
pounds the metal until it takes the shape
of a tool he can use. Heating, pounding.
Heating, pounding. Dead-lines, traffic.
Arguments, disrespect. Loud sirens,
silent-phones. Heating, pounding. Heating, pounding.
silence, phones. Heating, pounding. Heating, pounding.
Did you know that the smith in silversmith comes from the
old english word smite? Silversmiths: accomplished smiters.
So is God. Once a worker is satisfied with the form of his tool,
he begins to palings and pumice it. Using smaller hammer and
abrasive pads, he taps, he rubs and decorates. No one stops him.
No one yanks the hammer out of his hands and says, “Go easy on
that silver. You’ve pounded enough!” No, the craftsman buffets the
molecules of metal until He is finished with it. With some silversmiths,
I’m told, keep polishing until they can see their face in the tool they are
making. When will God stop on you? When He sees His reflection in you.

Herein do we see the Cross that whatever matters that we may accomplish by our own does not require the cross; it is only when we allow the Lord to live in our lives so that He may be our things and our all do we need the cross. If He makes no move, how can we move? Oh how we need to ask God to deliver us from our good works just as we ask Him for deliverance from our sins. How often it is relatively easier to be delivered from sin (since sin is condemned) than be delivered from the natural life (since many the are neither condemned nor rejected.)

“Life’s trials and tribulations are
actually blessings. For they are
God’s Saving Grace’s.”
“This is my personal mantra. One that
everyone can relate to. We all go through
hard times. Regardless of the severity, one
person’s own “trials and tribulations” are
extreme to them. If you can look past the
pain, eventually, you can come to realize
there was the reason GOD put you If the message in the Daily Life ‘2321 6:52.22PM’
“Oh! men and brethren, what would this heart feel if I could but believe that there were some among you who would go home and pray for a revival men whose faith is large enough, and their love fiery enough to lead them from this moment to exercise unceasing intercessions that God would appear among us and do wondrous things here, as in the times of former generations.” – Charles G. Spurgeon
Every true revival…has had its earthly origin in prayer. R A Torrey
A revival may be expected when Christians have a spirit of prayer for a revival. That is, when they pray as if their hearts were set upon it. When Christians have the spirit of prayer for a revival. When they go about groaning out their hearts desire. When they have real travail of soul. – Charles Finney
If you don’t do your part, don’t blame God. – Billy Graham on Sunday: Will You Do Your Part?
I want to encourage everyone to take a specific time each week and pray for revival. It can be 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc. Show God that you are committed and want revival. Yes, it may take some sacrifice, but how much do we really want revival? – Ricky Cothren
